The scene of the Gold Saucer date is one of the favorite moments for fans of the original Final Fantasy 7, and it returns in high definition in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This time, however, you won’t have to guess your relationship status with the members of your group and be surprised by the person who shows up for your date. A new relationship system, called Bonds of Friendship, has been added to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
As the tutorial of the system explains, “the strength of these bonds can change certain parts of the story.” One of these story moments is the date at the Gold Saucer, and you’ll be able to see what your potential partner feels for you through a variety of emoji-like expressions. And it worked in the original game because you didn’t know the date scene was coming.
“So, as people kind of know what’s going to happen, if it was still hidden and they didn’t roughly know what level of affinity they have with each character, it could be quite frustrating for players.” To alleviate this stress, players can check their status with their comrades. There is also more transparency on how your actions will affect their feelings towards you.
“For example, when you complete a side quest, the game will show you which character this quest will affect your relationship with,” explains Hamaguchi. If you think, “I want to date this character, I really need to make an effort to increase my affinities, get to know them,” then you can choose to do so rather than rushing through it. In the original game, four of Cloud’s companions were potential partners: Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie, and Barret.
Hamaguchi has not confirmed whether Rebirth will feature the same four companions, but there is no reason to not expect the same.
